My beloved brothers and sisters,
First of all let pray and thank to Allah only who was created human kind, living and non-living. And Peace be upon the master of the messengers, Prophet Muhammad saw. who was guided human kind from the darkness into the lightness.
My honorable teachers and my beloved brothers and sisters,
Thank you for the time to give my speech in this good occasion, and would like to give my speech with the title Islam and Environmental Conservation.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
We have to be grateful because we born as Muslim, the most perfect religion. Islam is not religion that consist of the doctrines how to worship Allah, but also it is regulate all aspects of our life, beginning from how we worship Allah, how we life with our society including Muslims and non Muslims, and how we interact with our environment.
And today, I would like to talk about Islam and environmental conservation. Why Islam talk about environment and its conservation? Before I talk more about Islam and environmental conservation, I would like to talk about the condition about our environment today, especially in Indonesia.
According to the statistic data, Indonesia has about 120 hectares of forest. It is almost 70% from the vast of its land, so, Indonesia the owner of the largest forest in South East Asia and number two in the world after Brazil. But we must be sorry because the deforestation in this country is so fast.
Forestry ministry reported that the rate of deforestation in Indonesia is about 2 million hectares per year, while WALHI (Wahana Lingkungan Hidup Indonesia) reported 3,5 million hectares per year. The continual damage of the environment confront the people with the raise of the temperature (Global Warming). And we can see today the serious effects of the damage of the environment, such as flood, land slide, hurricane or storm, long dry season, and the other disasters. The other effect is the melting of the ice block in two poles of our earth, so, it makes the sea level raise, if the sea level raise, the small islands will be sunk.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Many people today are infected by the modern culture such as consumerism, hedonism, and individualism. The main purposes of human activities today are to satisfy the desire of human. What is favorable for human, so it is good. One example of that culture is the exploitation of natural resources beyond the ability of the nature itself. The exploitation of nature beyond its ability caused the instability of the nature. So, as I said above the impacts are disasters. If we do not take any action to see the damage of our enviroment today, I believe that the condition of our environment is getting severe. The next generation will blame us for what we have done.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Let’s we back to Islam. Islam is a religion that not only teaches the way to worship Allah, but also it’s teach all aspects of human life that one of these aspects is the conservation of natural resource. The concept of natural conservation in Islam is inseparable doctrine with the concept of the Oneness of Allah (Tauhid), Syariah, and morality.
Islam has a clear conception about the exploitation and the conservation of natural resource. Allah does not prohibit human to exploit nature, but at the same time, Allah warn us not to exploit nature beyond its normal limit, so that causing the damage and instability of the nature.
Such as Allah said in Surah Al-Mulk, Verse 15
It is He Who has made the earth subservient to you, to walk through its tracts and eat of His provided sustenance. To Him is the return at resurrection.
And what Allah said in surah Al-A’araf verse 56
Do not create mischief in the land after it has been set in order. Pray to Him with fear and hope. Surely the mercy of Allah is always close to those who do good to others.
First Surah from Al-Qur’an above tells us that natural resource in this world is created for human, and the second one, Allah warns us not to make mischief or damage on the nature. It means that, Allah allows us to exploit nature but we may not exploit it beyond its ability that will cause the instability of the nature. And there are still many surah talk about nature and its utilization for human.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Our prophet Muhammad saw. Also give serious attention to natural conservation. If we read his journey of life, we will find a lot of stories that tell about the saying and the action of our prophet pertaining natural conservation.
Such as our prophet said,
If a Muslim plants a tree, that part of its produce consumed by men will be as almsgiving for him. Any fruit stolen from the tree will also be as almsgiving for him. That which the birds eat will also be as almsgiving for him. Any of its produce which people may eat thus diminishing it, will be as almsgiving for the Muslims who planted it.
In his life time, Prophet Muhammad had taught not to pollute water, air and land. He also had taught the way how to treat animals and to plant trees as many as possible. From these noble environmental ethics, we can realize Prophet as a great ecologist, scientist and pioneer of environmental protection when scientific outfits and innovations were nothing. Hence, those who spend a lot for environmental protection must take into account the noble ethics of prophet Muhammad(PBUH), and do the best to be practiced every where.
Finally ladies and gentlemen,
I repeat again, that the condition of our environment today is really worrying. If we take no action to see this situation, the situation will be worse. As a Muslim, we have the duty to save our environment because it was the order of our religion Islam. Saving the environment is one important doctrine of Islam, so this doctrine we can find in many occasions in al-Qur’an and hadits. Even, our prophet is one the most prominent figure in saving the nature.
I think that all, I am sorry for my mistake, thank you for your attention,
والسلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركته
